Chip Kelly Banking on Boom Rather than Bust

Saying head coach Chip Kelly made some noise this off season is a vast understatement. The craziness kicked off first with the cap casualty of long time Eagles Trent Cole and Todd Herremans and things were just getting started. Soon after, the leading rusher in Philadelphia Eagles history was traded to Buffalo. No draft picks, just player for player, LeSean McCoy for linebacker Kiko Alonso. Then the heads really started to roll when quarterback Nick Foles, a fourth round pick in 2015 AND a second round pick in 2016 were sent to St. Louis for quarterback Sam Bradford and a fifth round pick in 2015. Not to mention Jeremy Maclin left for his old coach Andy Reid in Kansas City, the Eagles signed free agents Byron Maxwell, Walter Thurmond with possibly Ryan Mathews and DeMarco Murray on their way in all within the first three days of the new football season. Phew. Chip Kelly has single handedly made mincemeat of the NFL norm getting rid of three key offensive starters after consecutive 10-6 seasons and things are only getting started. And by gauging the social media universe, most of Eagles Nation has not been pleased. What is coach Kelly doing?

Chip Kelly is revered as one of the most intelligent coaches in the NFL, but who knew he was such a gambler? To give the situation a stock term, it seems Kelly is buying low and selling high. Selling high on known commodities such as Nick Foles and LeSean McCoy and buying low on Sam Bradford and Kiko Alonso both of whom didn’t even play in 2014. Free agent acquisition Walter Thurmond only played two regular season games for the Giants last season before being placed on injured reserve with a torn pectoral muscle. Even the big fish Byron Maxwell who signed a six year, $60 million dollar contract only has one full season as a starter under his belt. Last but not least, as I write this, DeMarco Murray looks like he will become the next Philadelphia Eagles running back who also has a history of nagging injuries. Ultimately, Chip Kelly is banking that all of these new key players can stay healthy. If they do Kelly looks like a genius because a lot of these players have a lot of potential to be really good players. If they don’t, it very well may be a tough season for the Eagles. One thing is for sure, this is one hundred percent Chip Kelly’s team and only time will tell whether he will lead us to the promise land or he will go down with the ship with our hopes and dreams of a Super Bowl held hostage.
